Phillips Beach Trash on Selectmen's Agenda

Selectman Glenn Kessler requested a discussion on the carry in/carry out trash program for the board's meeting on Sept. 11.

Selectmen will discuss the pilot carry in/carry out trash policy at Phillips Beach when they meet Sept. 11.

Selectman Glenn Kessler requested the discussion item and wants people to come voice their thoughts.

This summer the town did not put trash or recycling containers at the entrance to the town beach. Instead, signs were posted directing visitors to carry out their trash.

Last week, two Shepard Avenue residents told selectmen last week that there was a lot of trash in the neighborhood. One of them said that trash was all over the place.

The pilot program applies only to Phillips Beach.

Selectmen instituted the test measure as a way to keep the beaches clean and to save money.

If carry in/carry out succeeds at Phillips Beach board members may consider extending it to other Swampscott beaches next year, board members said earlier.

Town Administrator Tom Younger said earlier the selectmen want to see if carry-in/carry-out is a better way to maintain the beach by having users get waste and trash off the beach sooner.
