Markey Trumps Gomez in Swampscott

The voter turnout was higher than expected.

Democratic US Rep. Edward Markey defeated political newcomer Gabriel Gomez in a special election Tuesday.

He won overall and he won in Swampscott, emerging victorious in each of the town's six precincts, according to voting results provided by Town Clerk Susan Duplin.

Markey will fill the state's U.S. Senate seat vacated by John Kerry when he became secretary of state.

The turnout in Swampscott was stronger than expected for a special election, ending up at 34 percent.
