The Commonwealth's newest senator received his committee assignments last week.

Sen. Ed Markey will replace former Sen. John Kerry on the Small Business and Entrepreneurship; Commerce, Science and Transportation and Foreign Relations Committees.

Markey served on two energy committees and was the chairman of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming as a congressman.

The Boston Globe's Noah Bierman called his assignments a "mild surprise," given his background.

His predecessor, former Sen. John Kerry, spent his entire career on the Foreign Relations Committee and was chairman six times.

Thrilled. I'm sure his fellow residents of Maryland are, too.
