Machon School Mostly Cleared of Contents

Only a portion of the basement remains to be cleared of furniture and school supplies.

The only items that will remain at Machon School after Monday will be the pews from the Andrews Chapel being stored in the gym.

The pews and items to be salvaged for metal recycling to support the Jackson Park project.

Director Gino Cresta said inmates with the Essex County House of Corrections have cleared Machon's first and second floors of debris and items.

They have also removed some of the contents of the basement and will continue clearing the basement today and Monday, if necessary.

They have filled two large Dumpsters with everything from wood to paper, rags to bags, and desks to books.

Several people stopped by to claim books before others were tossed, he said.

A third Dumpster will arrive to the site and be filled, as well.

In addition, another Dumpster will be located at the site and filled with items that contain metal and can be recycled.

Proceeds from the sale of the scrap metal will benefit Jackson Park, the director said.

The School Committee voted in January to give Machon to the town.

The brick Burpee Road building is in disrepair and has been plagued by vandals.

Machon closed its doors in 2007.

The school was built in 1921. It was named after a longtime teacher, Emma Machon, who taught at the nearby Essex Street School in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, said Swampscott Historian Lou Gallo.
