Elmwood Road Mailboxes Remain Unmoved

The town and postal service are still looking for a suitable location to move the boxes.

The hold-up to moving mailboxes from the front of the US Post Office is finding a suitable new spot for them.

The move would be intended to relieve crowded offstreet parking and prevent u-turns in front of the 49 Elmwood Road facility.

Town officials met with Elmwood Road neighbors a year ago on a variety of Post Office related items including the four boxes, the town administrator said earlier.

In May of this year, Town Administrator Tom  Younger told selectmen that the Postal Service had agreed to move its blue mailboxes.

Lynn Postmaster John Meuse said last week that the move needs further talks.

He said the Postal Service was willing to move the boxes to Town Hall property.

That move, however, posed problems given Town Hall's historical character; and the town has concerns about the boxes' influence on visibility for drivers entering and leaving Town Hall, the town administrator said.

The town was amenable to the Postal Service moving its boxes across the street from Town Hall but that move is not in keeping with postal service requirements.

The postal service requires boxes be on the same side as the facility and within sight of the old location, Younger said.

The town administrator said he and Department of Public Works Director Gino Cresta will review the advisability of locating boxes on the narrow strip of grass parallel to Town Hall property.

Talks will continue between the town and postal service.
