Precinct 6 Warden Lillian Covitz said the turnout was light at the Middle School as of 1 p.m.

"Very," she said.

Only 118 people had voted as of that time, she said.

That compares to 583 voters for Precinct 6 at 1 p.m. in the last town election, in November, Covitz said.

The last time the new police station proposal was on the ballot, in January 2010, a special election that included the Scott Brown candidacy, 1,070 people had voted at Precinct 6 as of 1 p.m., she said.

One of the voters this afternoon at Precinct 6, Ann Riddell, said she was motivated to come out and vote on the police station proposal.

She said she always votes.

The polls are open until 8 p.m.

Earlier, turnout at the town's six precincts appeared light as of 10 a.m.

 Precinct 1 Warden Dottie Kitoski said the voter turnout was steady but light for her precinct at the Senior Center.

Sign toters supporting a were at each polling place this morning, said Michael McClung, chairman of the town Finance Committee.

The police boosters will return later in the day, he said.

McClung was tallying the turnout at the respective precincts.

He said he was surprised at the light turnout, but had no gut feeling on whether people werefor or against the police article.

The article asks for a $3.35 million bond to build a $6.4 million station on town-owned land by the Humphrey Street pumping station.

The lone competitive election race is for the are vying for two three-year posts.
