Swampscott Dog Park Still Awaits ConsCom Approval

The goal of opening by September 1 won't happen.

When selectmen approved the Swampscott dog park earlier this summer the town administrator said the goal was to see it open by Sept. 1.

But Town Administrator Tom Younger said this week that park supporters still need to file with the Conservation Commission before construction can start.

Department of Works Director Gino Cresta said Thursday that the supporters, Swampscott Park for Off-leash Time, are working with their contractor to extend a water line — for the dogs —  to the park.

Once that's squared away SPOT will file its notice of intent to build the park with the Conservation Commission.

And once reviewed and approved by the commission, the 10,000-square-foot park will be built in the far corner of Phillips Park beside the practice football field.

No firm date has been set for the dog park to open.

But it's eagerly awaited.

On Thursday afternoon Joel and Elaine Spellman of Swampscott walked their German shepherds, Zeus and his mom, over Bondelevitch Way to the far lot where the park will be built.

The Spellmans look forward to the day the park opens.

So does Zeus, Joel said.
