Matt Robinson, Tierney's campaign manager said Mrs. Tierney had been struck by another vehicle.

“While traveling this morning, Patrice Tierney’s car was struck from behind by another car. She sustained some injuries and was treated at Beverly Hospital before being released around mid-day.  It appears that having her seat belt on prevented her injuries from being far more serious. She and Congressman Tierney thank those who expressed their concern during the last few hours and appreciate the continued thoughts and prayers from friends, family and supporters,” said Robison. “We are reviewing the Congressman's schedule for the next couple of days and will adjust it accordingly so that he can care for his wife.”
