Water Search For Missing Kayaker Suspended

The Coast Guard was to continue searching for missing kayaker Maryan Lisovich, 23, of Lynn, until sunset Sunday — 7 pm.

After that time the water search was to be suspended, Coast Guard spokesman Sean Carroll said at about 6 pm Sunday night.

To continue searching for the kayaker after dark would not increase the chances that the Coast Guard would find and rescue him, the spokesman said.

The maritime service went all out in its search for the missing 23-year-old from Lynn. The search started about 24 hours ago, on Saturday.

Today, Sunday, the Coast Guard search operation included two MH-60 helicopters and a Falcon Jet.

The service had a cutter and two other search and rescue boats in the operation.

In addition, there were state police, Massachusetts Environmental Police and harbormasters from Swampscott and Marblehead on the water looking for the missing man.

Swampscott police and firefighters will continue searching for the man on land after sunset, said Swampscott police spokesman Tim Cassidy.

The kayaker left Fisherman's Beach about 4 pm Saturday.

He was with a group of people but the only one to go into the water with a kayak at that point, a Coast Guard duty officer said earlier. It's possible the group including Maryan may have been kayaking earlier and came in to shore, the duty officer said. 

In any event, Maryan was the only one to go into the water at 4 pm, the duty officer said.

He was to return at 5:30 pm, and when he did not his girlfriend called 911.

The kayaker's blue kayak was found overturned in the surf with a paddle aboard in the area of Eisman's Beach at 7 pm Saturday, the duty officer said.
