The suspects, two or three individuals wearing black clothing and hiding their faces under ski masks, robbed the victim of his iPhone 4 and a gold chain, said Swampscott police Det. Tim Cassidy.

First, though, they threw him to the ground, demanding money, police said.

"The suspects struck the victim in the head and in the ribs with an object believed to be a bat."

The victim was taken to the hospital with bruises to his head, forearm and wrist, police said. He was treated and released.
