Town Group Pushing For New Station

Vote Yes On New Police Station PAC wants residents to vote for a new home for the Swampscott Police Department on Tuesday.

Swampscott’s Bob Baker hopes town residents will approve a new police station when they come out to vote in the general town election on Tuesday.

Baker, the chairman of the Vote Yes on a New Police Station PAC (Political Action Committee) says the time has come for new quarters to house Swampscott police.

“Our PAC has over 50 members, and includes members from across town,” Baker said. “We’ve been at this for several years and our group includes current and former town selectmen and women, residents from across town and members of the finance committee.”

The group hopes a resounding “yes” vote on Tuesday will get Swampscott one step closer to a new police station.

The building site would be on town land located on Humphrey Street, next to the Bertram House, the former location of the town treatment facility.

“The current police station is inadequate, we’ve simply outgrown the building,” Baker said.

There are issues with the problems arising from housing male and female prisoners after arrests and access to interview rooms in connection with criminal cases, Baker said.

With Tuesday’s vote fast approaching, Baker encourages concerned citizens and people seeking more information on the need for a new police station in town to call him directly at 1-978-764-0700.

“We have many, many town officials, past and present, who are with us in seeking a new, modern police facility for the entire community,” Baker said Friday afternoon, across the street from the current headquarters of the Swampscott Police Department at 86 Burrill Street.
