Swampscott Suspect Faces Larceny Charge

The resident allegedly tried to steal more $500 worth of merchandise from Stop & Shop.

 

A Swampscott woman faces a larceny charge for allegedly stealing more than $500 worth of merchandise from Stop & Shop supermarket.

Stefanie Santarpio, 36, of 77 Essex St. Apt. 8, is scheduled for an Aug. 9, pretrial hearing in Lynn District Court on the larceny count and a shoplifting charge.

The suspect was arrested by on June 16, shortly before 2 pm after the station received a telephone call from employees at Stop & Shop at 450 Paradise Ave., according to a court report.

Employees had detained the suspect by the exit with a grocery carriage that held $528.03 worth of store merchandise, the report states.

When questioned by police, Santarpio said she had been in the store for a few hours.

She said she had returned hair care products to the store and was given a store credit for $24, the report states.

She told police she used the store credit to buy two candy bars and continued shopping.

When the Swampscott police officer asked Santarpio if she had a receipt for the $528.03 of store items, she said no, police said.

She said that she paid for them with a debit card in the self-checkout lane but did not get a receipt and was not sure if she had money in her account to cover the groceries.

Santarpio was taken to the police station where she was booked on the charges and bailed.

The suspect was arraigned on the charges June 18, in Lynn District Court.
