Swampscott Man Faces Arson and B&E Charges

The 18-year-old allegedly broke into the home of the Nahant Public Works superintendent and set fire to a second-floor bedroom.

 

A Swampscott 18-year-old is scheduled for arraignment Monday after he allegedly broke into a Maple Avenue home in Nahant on Saturday and set fire to the second-floor bedroom.

Joshua Carreiro, 18, of 166 Puritan Road was taken into custody by Nahant police on Saturday about 1 a.m., according to Nahant police.

Carreiro was charged with arson of a dwelling, destruction of property over $250, receiving stolen property, felony breaking and entering, two counts of breaking and entering a motor vehicle and seven counts of possession of a class E substance, police said.

Nahant police responded to a 911 call reporting a breaking and entering at 12:55 a.m.

The homeowner was involved in a struggle with the suspect, police said.

The homeowner, Nahant Department of Public Works Superintendent Timothy Lowe, extinguished the fire and called police, according to the Boston Globe. 

Investigators said Carreiro was a former friend of the homeowner’s son, according to a CBS Boston report
