Selectmen Approve Two Police Promotions

The department has both a new lieutenant and sergeant.

Swampscott Police Sgt. John Behen was promoted to the position of Provisional Police Lieutenant and officer David Skomurski was promoted to the position of Provisional Police Sergeant Wednesday night by the Board of Selectmen.

The two officers will be confirmed permanently in these positions next fall once they pass their tests.

"It looks like there will be a lot of studying at the police department," Board Chairman Richard Malagrifa joked after the selectmen  voted unanimously for the promotions.

Police Chief Ron Madigan praised both officers as "natural leaders in the department." He said they "exemplify the qualifies we expect in our officers."

Town Administrator Thomas Younger thanked the entire department for its cooperation in resolving personnel issues that allowed for the approval of these appointments.

The positions opened with the retirement of Lt. Jeanne Butler.

Also, the promotions will result in one fewer patrol officer on the force.
