Report of Possible Missing Swimmer at Eisman's Prompts Search

Firefighters, police officers, the harbormaster and Coast Guard crews searched the shore and waters off Swampscott on Sunday afternoon for an hour and a half finding no sign of a missing swimmer.

 

Reports of a possible missing swimmer in choppy waters at Sunday about 2 pm prompted a water, air and land search.

The search was called off after 90 minutes when searchers found no evidence of a missing swimmer and received no report of anyone missing, said Swampscott Remo Zimbaldi.

A lifeguard at Eisman's Beach reported the possible missing swimmer, the captain said.

A swimmer had been swimming off the beach from buoy to buoy. At one point the lifeguard looked out and did not see the swimmer, the captain said.

Danielle Strauss said the lifeguard did a sweep of the beach and did not see any indication that the swimmer was still there.

To err on the side of caution, the lifeguard reported a possible missing swimmer to police.

Local authorities called the Coast Guard, the director said.

Capt. Zimbaldi said two firefighters in the department's small vessel, a Boston Whaler, searched the water from Eisman's and vicinity to  while others searched the water from land with binoculars.

Police officers walked the beach, searching for evidence of a missing person, such as an unoccupied beach towel, he said.

The harbormaster searched waters off Eisman's and nearby, as did a Coast Guard vessel.

Meanwhile, a Coast Guard helicopter searched overhead.

The searchers found no evidence of a missing swimmer and called off the search about 3:30 pm, the captain said.

As of about 10 pm Sunday night the department had received no report of anyone missing, Capt. Zimbaldi said.
