Prosecution Presents Details in Hit-and-Run Charges Against Swampscott Woman

Upon arriving to 16 Magnolia Road Tuesday night about 7:30, Swampscott police found a woman lying on the curb, her legs on the sidewalk and her head and upper body in the gutter.

The woman had been walking on the sidewalk when she was struck by an SUV, she later told Swampscott police in an interview at Salem Hospital.

On Wednesday, Kimberly Ann English, 49, Swampscott, was arraigned in Lynn District Court on charges alleging that she had struck the walker with her SUV.

English, a teacher at Ingalls Elementary School in Lynn, was ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing on Sept. 17. The judge entered a not guilty plea for the defendant.

The victim was transported to Salem Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, but a severely injured ankle, police said earlier.

On Wednesday, Essex Assistant District Attorney Erin Bellavia told Judge James Wexler that the injured woman is dating English's ex-husband.

Bellavia said the victim was in Swampscott, visiting from Florida, and that she and English's ex-husband had just arrived to the Magnolia residence from the grocery store before the hit-and-run.

A child in the house told police he saw an SUV strike the victim.

A neighbor and the victim's boyfriend heard screams for help after the woman was struck.

A Massachusetts State Police collision and accident reconstruction expert later examined the defendant’s car at her residence and found that the damage was consistent with striking a person or soft object, the prosectuor said.

The damage included bumper and hood damage and a cracked headlight.

English told police that she had been in an accident with a white truck on Route 16 in Revere, the prosecutor said.

English faces charges of armed assault with intent to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, leaving the scene of personal injury, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, violation of a restraining order, and speeding.  

The suspect's ex-husband has an active restraining order against the defendant on behalf of his children.
