Police Arrest Suspected Storm Drain Thief

The Winthrop man was charged with 10 counts of larceny in connection with Nov. 3 thefts of drain covers in Swampscott.

 

charged a Winthrop man Wednesday with 10 counts of larceny in connection with the theft of storm drain covers from Swampscott streets.

Michael Feudo, 38, of 285 Revere St., Winthrop, was arrested at his residence by Swampscott and Winthrop police, said Swampscott police Det. Tim Cassidy.

Detective Ted Delano applied for and was granted an arrest warrant for Feudo.

Earlier, Swampscott detectives received information from Revere police detectives that they had arrested Feudo following thefts of sewer covers in Revere, police said.

Feudo admitted, while being interviewed by Revere detectives, to also stealing covers in Lynn and Swampscott, police said.

On Wednesday night, Feudo was transported back to the Swampscott PD for booking where he was charged with 10 counts of larceny over $250, police said.

Nov. 3, in the early morning hours,10 cast-iron storm drain covers were stolen from Swampscott streets leaving gaping holes that put motorists and pedestrians at risk, police said.

The total value of the 10 covers was $6,350, according to Swampscott DPW Director Gino Cresta, police said.

Thieves take storm drain covers and sell them for their metal value, Det. Cassidy said earlier.

Swampscott streets targeted on Nov. 3, were Fuller Ave, Pine Hill Road, Beverly Road, Shelton Road, Bradlee Ave, Phillips Ave and Harrison Ave. 

The drains are at the foot of roadside curbing. Rain and snow melt flow into them and along the town's storm-water lines.

The covers are made of cast iron and weigh about 150 pounds.
