Updated: Lynn Man Killed After Train Collision Behind Salem Police Station

Salem Fire Department walks tracks and assists passengers off train.

 

A man was reportedly hit and killed by a train on the tracks behind the in the Mill Hill area Sunday morning, according to scanner reports.

The victim was a 28-year-old man from Lynn,Boston.com reported Sunday afternoon. His name has not yet been released, pending notification of family

Shortly after 9:30 p.m. the Salem Police confirmed the collision was fatal.

The accident occurred at approximately 8 a.m. Passenger Marsha Finkelstein said the accident was "shortly after it [the train] putlled out of the Salem Depot...The train stopped on the other side of the tunnel."

On its Facebook Page, reported firefighters were walking the tracks and assisting passengers off the train using a gate on Canal Street. Salem Police were also at the scene.

On Twitter, Finkelstein @movingbeyond tweeted at Salem Patch "FYI - Medical emergency on Commuter Rail in Salem. Waiting to see what's next. Hope person's ok."

At 8:46 a.m. Finkelstein reported passengers were off the train and waiting via her Twitter account.

"After a while they took us off the train. Everyone was really helpful — the train conductor, the Salem Police and Salem Fire Department," Finkelstein said.

Shortly after 9 a.m., Finkelstein spoke with Salem Patch via phone and described the situation and said people were "milling about" making travel plans.

At 8:45 a.m the following MBTA alert was sent via email: "Newbury/Rock 2104 07:00 AM  Due to a medical emergency in Salem, Newbury/Rockport servive will be effected as Follows: Train service will operate between Newbury/Rockport & Salem Station. Buses will be provided between Salem & Lynn Station. Train service will be provided between Lynn Station & North Station. Please allow extra time for your commute and anticipate delays."

At 9:42 a.m. this email alert was sent out by the MBTA: operating normal rail service between Newburyport/Rockport and North Station with residual delays due to an earlier medical emergency. 5/13/2012 9:42 AM

Of the scene Finkelstein said "I'm actually pretty calm. My first instinct was someone is hurt. I hope they're okay."

The incident is currently under investigation.
