Peabody Man Charged With OUI and Leaving Accident Scene

A man arrested on Thanksgiving for allegedly hitting another motorist on Paradise Road while driving drunk failed to appear in court for his arraignment Monday.

A Peabody man accused of leaving the scene of an accident while driving drunk on Thanksgiving failed to appear in court for his arraignment Monday.

Wualmer Guzman, 27, of 36 Oak St., Peabody, did not show up for his arraignment in Lynn District Court on charges of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident with property damage and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

According , at 9:56 p.m., local officers received word of a hit and run on Paradise Road. When officers arrived on scene, a woman in a white SUV pointed out Guzman's car, which was reportedly driving away with front end damage.

When police approached Guzman's car, he allegedly moved a Corona beer bottle from the cup holder to the floor on the passenger side of the vehicle. As he was being questioned, police noted that they could "smell a strong alcoholic odor" coming from Guzman and that his eyes were bloodshot and glassy.

A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered many other Corona bottles scattered throughout the car, including several stuffed into the pocket behind the passenger seat, according to court documents.

Guzman reportedly refused to submit to field sobriety tests and was uncooperative during the booking process. A warrant will be issued for his arrest.
