Motorcyclist Injured in Salem Street Crash

Police are investigating a two-vehicle crash involving an SUV and motorcycle on Salem Street at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The injured motorcyclist, a 45-year-old local man, was transported with non-life-threatening injuries to Massachusetts General Hospital, police said.

The driver of the Mazda SUV, also a local person, was uninjured, police said.

Police are not releasing the identity of the individuals at this point.

Swampscott police officer Candace Doyle is conducting the accident reconstruction, assisted by fellow and the State Police Crime Scene unit.

Police blocked off Salem Street to traffic after the accident.

Swampscott firefighters were dispatched to the accident at 1:34, arriving three minutes later, Capt. Remo Zimbaldi said.

Upon arrival they saw a Swampscott police officer keeping the motorcyclist's neck and upper body steady.

The motorcycle was on its side by a fire hydrant next to Tedesco Golf Course and the rider 10-15 feet away from the motorcycle.

The motorcyclist appeared to have serious but not life threatening injuries to his upper body.

He was conscious, the captain said.

The man was placed on a backboard and into an ambulance.

Firefighters called in a medflight but paramedics later cancelled it after they decided they could transport the man to Massachusetts General sooner than the med-flight could, which was some 30 minutes away, the captain said.
