Marblehead Man Held Without Bail After 5th OUI

The man allegedly drove off after a car accident at the intersection of Burpee Road and Essex Street late Monday. He was ordered held without bail in Lynn District Court this afternoon.

A Marblehead man was ordered held without bail Tuesday in Lynn District Court after his arrest by for driving under the influence of alcohol. 

Michael J. Keenan, 46, of 80 Roosevelt Ave., pleaded innocent to OUI, fifth offense, leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, subsequent offense and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

At 11:46 p.m., Swampscott police officers responded to a report of a hit and run on Burpee Road. When officers arrived, Keenan had reportedly driven his Honda CRV away from the accident to a nearby driveway on Burpee Terrace.

Keenan reportedly told arresting officers that he had "way, way too much" to drink and refused to submit to a blood or alcohol test.

The owner of the vehicle Keenan allegedly struck told police she was waiting at a red light at the intersection of Burpee Road and Essex Street when Keenan "took a very wide right turn onto Burpee Road and crossed into (her) lane and struck the rear quarter panel of her Toyota RAV 4," according to court documents.

After he reportedly passed out at the police station and became unresponsive, Keenan was transported to Salem Hospital for medical attention.

He was reportedly brought back to the station at 5:30 a.m. to continue the booking process.

Keenan was arrested for operating while under the influence of alcohol in Somerville on March 12, 1984; in Cambridge on June 19, 1986; again in Cambridge on June 30, 1986; and in Somerville on May 6, 1992.

Keenan is scheduled back in court Oct. 17, for a pretrial hearing.
