Lightning Sparks Fire on Oceanside Terrace

Firefighters stopped the fire from spreading beyond the second-floor bathroom.

Lightning struck 1 Oceanside Terrace on Thursday night, sparking fire in the home's second-floor bathroom.

The parents and two children got out of their home safely, and firefighters stopped the fire from spreading, Capt. Mark Ryan said.

The home is located off Eastern Avenue a short distance from the fire station.

Firefighters hauled hoses upstairs and blasted the fire, knocking it down.

They also cut into walls to make sure the fire was not smoldering in a crevice.

The house is habitable but its electric power was shut off and there was some water damage below the bathroom, the fire captain said.

The lightning strike traveled through a vent pipe that led to the bathroom, sparking the fire, Ryan said.

A Lynn fire engine responded to the scene, as well.

The parents and two children were outside when the firefighters arrived from just around the corner.

Town assessing records indicate the home was built in 1912 and is owned by John and Rosalind English.
