Firefighters Raise a Mighty Sum Cooking for a Cure

The annual benefit for the MDA raised over $19,000

Well over 600 people came out Saturday to support Marblehead Firefighters Local 2043's Cooking for a Cure event.

The 5th annual benefit for the Muscular Dystrophy Association at the Danversport Yacht Club raised over $19,000, said event organizer Tim Doane, a Marblehead firefighter.

Best overall, the Avis Cup winner, was Swampscott, the department's third victory in five years.

Anthony Pierro of the Swampscott Fire Department also created the first-place dish, pulled pork sliders.

Swampscott Fire Chief Kevin Breen said Anthony's victory was well deserved. His homemade barbecue sauce was a zesty delight and the sliders melted in your mouth, he said.

Marblehead won the very first Cooking for a Cure. Swampscott won the second and third years and now the fifth. Melrose won last year with a lobster macaroni and cheese.

Among the attendees at Saturday's event was Congressman Stephen Lynch, a candidate for the Democratic nomination in Massachusetts' US Senate race. Candidates are vying for the seat vacated by John Kerry when he became the nation's secretary of state.

Next year's Cooking for a Cure is March 22.

About the MDA

The Muscular Dystrophy Association covers 43 different neuromuscular diseases, including Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, the most common form of muscular dystrophy in young boys; and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or ALS, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

The MDA’s largest national sponsor, the International Association of Fire Fighters, helps maintain research and health-care programs, including the MDA clinic at Lahey Clinic in Burlington, along with support groups and MDA Summer Camp.

Thanks to the IAFF, more than 3,500 children with neuromuscular disease across the country have enjoyed MDA summer camps, such as the weeklong camp at Camp Allen in Bedford, N.H., according to Doane.
