UPDATED: Fire Erupts in Pine Street Home

Firefighters knocked down the flames, containing the fire to the home's first floor.

Wednesday night's fire at 84 Pine St. was accidental, said Swampscott fire Capt. Remo Zimbaldi.

Fire erupted in the kitchen shortly before 9:30 pm Wednesday and smoke blanketed the home and street.

Smoke, water and fire damage left the 2 1/2-story home uninhabitable for the couple and their three children.

The family is staying with a relative, according to neighbor Cindy Cavallaro, who is coordinating a help drive for the family.

About 12 hours earlier, firefighters knocked down flames before they could spread from the kitchen to second-floor bedrooms.

Firefighters ripped out cabinets and cut into the wall and ceiling to chase down hidden hotspots and prevent the fire's spread upward, Swampscott fire Lt. Bob Surette said earlier.

No injuries were reported.

The three-bedroom, single-family was boarded up on all sides Thursday morning and remains uninhabitable.

The fire caused water damage and extensive smoke damage, fire officials said.

Wednesday about 9:30 pm he next street over, Burrill Street, resident Richard Page was watching television about 9:30 pm in his front room when several fire trucks roared passed, their red lights flashing.

Pine Street was engulfed in smoke, he said.

At the scene he saw no flames — only smoke. It was pouring from the chimney and through the pitched roof and out the broken windows.

Firefighters from Lynn and Marblehead helped at the scene, and Salem provided back-up at the Swampscott Fire Station.

The house was built in 1890 and is valued at $257,200 on the town website.

It's located near the rail station.
