Eight Tips For Holiday Safety

The Swampscott Police Department issues tips for safety at home during the holidays.

The holidays can increase opportunities for criminal activity. The suggests these simple tips to assist you in having a safe and happy holiday season.

At Home:

1. Make sure all doors and windows have secondary locks (window pins, deadbolts, dowels, etc.) and use them!

2. Ensure that dark areas and entrances have outdoor lights that are turned on after dark or that are activated by sensors.

3. Place gifts where they can't be seen from the outside.

4. Avoid opening the door to strangers. Legitimate delivery people will be able to show identification.

5. If having a get together at your house remember that minors can't consume alcohol, and hide your prescription drug medications. They are often stolen during house parties. 

6. Investigate charities before donating by calling the Secretary of the Commonwealth's office at (617) 727-7030 or 1-800-392-6090 or the charity's main office.

7. Be sure to mail cards with money, checks or gift certificates from the Post Office.

8. If traveling, use timers for lights and radios while you're away. Ask a trusted friend, neighbor to watch your home. Place your home on the Swampscott Police House Check list so the police can check your home as well. Remember to make arrangements for mail and newspapers.
