Man Arrested for Breaking into the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, Stealing Sacramental Wine

The man allegedly told police he came into the church "to find peace."

A Dedham man was arrested and charged with breaking and entering with intent to commit a felony after he allegedly broke into the Cathedral of the Holy Cross on Wednesday.

Police responded to a radio call for a breaking and entering in progress at 75 Union Park Street at 7:31 a.m.  The custodian of the Cathedral stated that he came in that morning at about 7:05 a.m. and found candles lit throughout the entire church including the attic and the basement. The custodian said he found a man inside the storage area in the front of the church, behind the altar, and called 9-1-1.

Police found the suspect was lying on the ground with an open bottle of sacramental wine, an open container of the Eucharist and several battery-operated candles lit near by. Officers searched the church and found minimal damage, save for a few broken candles.

The suspect stated that he had come from home at Legacy Place in Dedham and was going to work in Quincy. The suspect told officers that he entered through a side basement door and that he came into the church "to find peace."

Jorge Jose Guvara of 2000 Presidents Way, Dedham was arrested and charged with breaking and entering with intent to commit a felony.
