Injuries to the operator of the vehicle did not appear to be life-threatening.

An elderly man involved in a single-car accident on Essex Street Tuesday afternoon received injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, said Lt. Sheila Scranton.

The man's vehicle was on its roof near Essex Terrace and Burrill Street when firefighters arrived to the scene shortly before 4 pm.

Passersby had already helped the man from the vehicle and he was conscious and alert, the lieutenant said.

The man was concerned for the well being of his dog, likely a terrier mix, that was in the vehicle, she said.

The dog was shaking but otherwise appeared to be OK when firefighters left the pet in the care of an animal control officer, the lieutenant said.

The driver was transported to Salem Hospital.
