Obituary: George Howard Gibb Sr., 99, Formerly of Swampscott

The obituary for George H. Gibb, 99, formerly of Swampscott.

George Howard Gibb, 99, a retired mechanical engineer for General Electric Co. died April 21, 2014 at his home in Rotonda West, FL.

Born August 1, 1914 in Wing, IL, he later moved with his family to Morral, OH. Farming provided the livelihood for his parents Gilbert and Irene (Walsh) and their five children. George's farming heritage stayed with him through a lifetime. 

Upon graduating from the engineering school at Ohio State University, Mr. Gibb worked at GE in Pittsfield, MA, before moving to Lynn during WWII to begin his career in designing steam turbine equipment at GE's Riverworks Plant. Mr. Gibb greatly enjoyed his work and during his forty years at General Electric was awarded several patents.
 
After his marriage to Margaret (Delp), of Toledo, OH in 1946, the couple resided in Marblehead where they started their family. In 1952 George and Margaret moved to Swampscott to raise their seven children. 

Mr. Gibb and his wife enjoyed traveling and golf. George won many tournaments at The Thomson Club in North Reading and he also faithfully followed his "Buckeyes" in all of their sporting endeavors. He was a daily communicant at St. Francis of Assisi Church during his retirement years in Florida, where he often started his day with the observation that it was "another day in paradise."

George was preceded in death by his wife Margaret, a son Matthew and a daughter Deborah. He is survived by his children Marybeth Edwards and her husband James of Quincy , George Jr. and his wife Julie of Rochester, NY, Cynthia Bridgham and her husband Bruce of New Gloucester, ME , John and his wife MaryEllen of Lynn, Mark and his wife Irina of Swampscott, his sisters Florence Wilson and her husband Jack of Salt Lake City, UT, Geraldine Weston and her husband James of Morral, OH , and sister-in-law Hilda (Baker) Gibb of Marion, OH. Mr. Gibb was a loving "Grampa" to his grandchildren, Sarah and David Edwards, Rachael Bridgham, Patrick Gibb, Elizabeth Gibb, and his two great-grandsons, Jack and Leo Beals. He was also a special "Uncle George" to many nieces and nephews.

George Gibb hoped to be remembered as a "fine fellow" and was a faithful son, husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend to many. He lived a full and long life and will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by his family.

His Funeral will be held on Saturday May 10, 2014 at 10:30am from the Solimine Funeral Home 67 Ocean St. (RTE1A), Lynn, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11am in St. John the Evangelist Church, Swampscott. Burial will be in Swampscott Cemetery. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visitation Saturday 9am-10:30am.
