Obituary: Douglas Finlay Allen

Douglas Allen, formerly of Swampscott, was born May 7, 1926, and died May 22, 2013. He served on various boards in Swampscott for many years including the Board of Selectmen.

 

Douglas Finlay Allen, of Salem, formerly of Swampscott, passed away after a short illness on May 22, 2013.

He was born in Boston on May 7, 1926, son of Clarence E. Allen and Elizabeth L. Allen. He was also the son of Katherine B. Allen. He attended Camp Chewonki of which his father was the founder, Rivers School and graduated from, Deerfield Academy '43, Harvard, AB '47, Harvard Business School '49, and received an ALM Degree '89, also from Harvard.

He served as a lieutenant (jg) in the Navy in the Pacific.
Doug was for many years a partner of Farquhar & Black in Lynn and a Director of the Eastern Bank. He served as President of the Board of Trustees of Lynn Hospital, as well as President of the Board of Trustees of Tower School in Marblehead. He received the Silver Beaver Award, the highest Boy Scout Council Award.

His greatest public service commitment was to the Town of Swampscott, which he served in several capacities, as head of the Finance Committee, Town Moderator, and Chairman of the Board of Selectmen, serving all together for 47 years.

As a Justice of the Peace, he performed many marriage ceremonies. He was an avid fly fisherman and accomplished gardener.
He was a long standing member of the Whiting Club of Swampscott and a member of Rotary Club with a perfect 50 year attendance record. He was also a member of the R.O.M.E.O.S.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Louise Breed Allen; by their children Doug Jr., Pitch (Richardson) and Tapley Sheresky, daughter in law Lisa Fulweiler Allen, and son in law Steven Sheresky; and his grandchildren, Douglas F. Allen III, Spencer P. Allen, Kenneth T. Sheresky, and Lucy B. Sheresky. His brother John L. Allen predeceased him.


Funeral Services under the direction of the Solimine Landergan and Richardson Funeral Home 67 Ocean St. (RTE1A0, Lynn are private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Chewonki Foundation, 485 Chewonki Neck Road, Wiscasset, Maine 04578.
