Swampscott Farmers' Market A Go

The Recreation Commission still needs volunteers but the group is committed to opening the market at Swampscott High School starting in June.

Recreation Director Danielle Strauss and Recreation Commission member Glenn Kessler announced to selectmen on Wednesday that the commission is committed to opening a Swampscott Farmers' Market this year.

That being said the commission needs volunteers to help with the market, Strauss and Kessler said.

The location will be in the Swampscott High School front parking lot. The market, which already has a large Danvers farm as the anchor vendor, will be open Sundays from 10 am to 1 pm starting in mid-June, they said.

It will run through mid-October.

The commission is looking for a manager but will open this summer whether they find a manager or not.

The commission wants the market to be a family friendly venue with entertainment.

They hope to have vendors that offer products in addition to fresh produce and crafts. Perhaps a local lobsterman will sell lobster or a bakery will offer baked goods, Kessler said.

"People will definitely come," said Selectman Jill Sullivan.

Farmers' markets are growing in popularity throughout the country, Kessler said.

The commission needs volunteers to help get the ball rolling.
