The officer, Oswaldo Martinez, was travelling east on Humphrey Street on one of the lead motorcycles, escorting the charity motorcycle ride.

"Several witnesses said a vehicle being operated by Bradford Fields of Swampscott cut off the officer causing him to crash his motorcycle into the side of Fields' motor vehicle as it turned onto Alden Road," Det. Cassidy said.

"One witness observed seeing the officer with his lights and siren activated and observed the officer fly over his handlebars and over the hood of Fields m/v." the detective said.

Officer Martinez was transported to North Shore Medical Center in Salem with non-life-threatening injuries. Fields was issued civil citations following the investigation.

Thousands of motorcyclists pass through town each year on the annual Witch Ride, which raises money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
