Five Things You Need to Know Today: April 19

1) Newsbit of the Day: The War Memorial Committee sold water and cookies at the Swampscott's Got Talent contest raising $197 to help pay for a Global War on Terrorism monument, said Committee Chairman David Van Dam. The new Iraq and Afghanistan war monument will honor Swampscott residents who lost their lives and who served. Fundraising efforts continue as supporters seek to raise $25,000 to build the monument.

2) Swampscott Scholars:  inducted 29 National Honor Society members on March 13. The society honors students for excellence in four areas: scholarship, leadership, service, and character. One of the 29 students was Christian Carman.

3) Swampscott Athletics: Big Blue boys lacrosse return to the friendly surroundings of Phillips Park on Friday when they play the Fishermen of Gloucester at 4 pm

4) Weather Watch:  The National Weather Service is calling for a sunny day with a high near 62.
