Updated: Brant Geese Line the Beach

Sunday's gorgeous weather brought out these black and white sea birds.

 

It wasn't just Kell's Kreme that had a long line on Sunday night as temperatures hovered close to 70 degrees. (As the late great Don Kent of WBZ radio would say back in the day — those are some "balmy" temperatures.)

A few tenths of a mile away on the shore of Fisherman's Beach stretched a line of sea birds.

George Allen captured photos of the black-and-white birds.

Several readers wrote in to report that these birds are Brant geese. They have distinctive black and white markings on their bodies. Looks like they have dark heads and fairly long necks.

Jim O reported seeing 80 to 90 of them on the beach at the Swampscott/Lynn line last week.

Wikipedia says of the geese that they like to feed on seaweed and other marine vegetation.

Maybe that explains why these birds were lined up at the water line on Sunday.
