More Butter, Less Guns

The Pentagon is receiving $.60 on every dollar in the federal discretionary budget, it's time military spending is reduced.

Times are tough. While Wall Street may be optimistic, the recession isn't ending for most of us. High unemployment continues to plague our country and jobless people still need unemployment insurance. Working families need a payroll tax break for the rest of this year and America needs to continue to rebuild the economy. Congress is considering eliminating Saturday mail delivery, cutting healthcare spending, and selling public property.

These proposals ask the people hit hardest by the economic collapse to pay for their own relief. We cannot cut our way out of the recession, and we need all Americans to invest in the future of our economy.

Here is an idea: make taxes fair and cut unnecessary military spending and create new jobs by investing in infrastructure, education, childcare and housing.

At a time when the Pentagon is receiving $.60 on every dollar in the federal discretionary budget, it's time military spending is reduced. We have pulled our troops out of Iraq and they should be out of Afghanistan soon. A smaller military might actually make us safer by not deploying forces around the world and getting us into wars that Americans don’t support.

And at a time when some of the richest corporations pay no taxes, and some of the wealthiest families pay lower tax rates than the middle-class, it is inexcusable to take more from working people.

We need fair and equal taxation. We must end unnecessary war expenses and reduce military spending. We need to work for a future that fosters economic security and equal opportunity for all.

Our community, and country, works best when the residents and our elected leaders create long-term growth and economic development.

Economists talk of “Guns and Butter” to distinguish between spending on military or domestic programs. It is generally accepted that spending on “guns” does not provide as much of an economic multiplier effect as does spending on “butter”.

Let’s demand a higher rate of return on our tax dollar. Tell Congress: “More Butter, Less Guns.”
