Students Celebrate Walking and Biking to School

Health and safety were themes at Tuesday's ribbon cutting celebrating the
Safe Routes to School Program's new sidewalks, bump-outs and crossings by Stanley School.

So was the cooperation between local supporters, school officials, town officials, the state DOT and the federal government that funded the $280,000 project.

Children cheered and cut a red ribbon into many pieces outside the school on the chilly November morning.

Speakers including former Stanley School principal and current Assistant Superintendent Pam Angelakis.

She reflected on the long road and teamwork that made the project possible.

The work started six years ago and included the hard work and dedication of Kim Ryan, Susan Munafo, Pam Angelakis, DPW Director Gino Cresta and School Resource Officer Rose Cheever.

The SRO reminded students Tuesday they still need to use caution and take care making sure they get to school safely.

J. Marchese and Sons, an Everett construction company did the work, which also included landscaping, signage placement and street painting.

A prominent feature of the project is its bump-outs.

These features extend into the road in arcs from the curb, reducing the distance that walkers have to cross the street.

They have been installed at Orchard Road and Orchard Circle; at Whitman Road and Orchard Road; and Orchard Circle and Neighborhood Road, the DPW director said earlier.

The project also includes new curbing and sidewalks.

Among officials at the event were Town Administrator Tom Younger, Selectmen John Callahan and Glenn Kessler, School Committee Chairman Rick Kraft and School Committee member Amy O'Connor.
