Stoneham Beating Swampscott in Sagewell's Community Energy Challenge 2013

Stoneham is in the lead to win Sagewell's first annual community Energy Challenge contest.

Stoneham is in the lead to win Sagewell's first annual community Energy Challenge contest. Sagewell will award the top five of the 35 competing communities with free thermal images for all the homes in town. Residents have until November 1, 2013 to apply and help their community be the next fully thermal imaged town in Massachusetts.

"We are very excited about the energy challenge. It combines our passions for catalyzing homeowners to make energy efficiency improvements to their homes and to leverage the power of community action to encourage individuals to make improvements," said Brad Harkavy, Chief Operating Officer at Sagewell.  “With zero cost to the homeowner for a comprehensive energy assessment, we make it very easy for folks to participate."

The EPA estimates "that homeowners can typically save up to 20 percent of their heating and cooling costs (or up to 10 percent of their total energy costs) by air-sealing their homes and adding insulation in attics, floors over crawl spaces, and accessible basement rim joists." Sagewell takes thermal photographs of homes so the owners can visualize just how much energy—and money—is being lost. The thermal pictures of the homes are taken at night to deliver the clearest images and show just how much heat and energy is escaping via window and door frames, out of roofs, siding and the home's frame. This free service has already been provided to over 4,500 Massachusetts residents, helping them save thousands in energy costs.
