Different Takes and Hugs For Class of 2013

Commencement speaker Scott Powell remembered scores from underdog wins by Big Blue football and hockey in 2012-13, even as he urged classmates to forge ahead and take chances and make their mark.

Faculty speaker James Morrison urged students to not look back on their high school days for inspiration but to reinvent themselves and be flexible and put high school behind them.

The advice and anecdotes at graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2013 Sunday at Blocksidge Field turned on variety.

Morrison compared high school/the past to the body at an Irish wake.

"They need you to have a party but nobody expects you to say much," he said.

There was something for everyone to take from the graduation ceremony — or leave behind.

The afternoon stirred nostalgic, motivational and hopeful remarks, as well as those that embraced adversity and mistakes as fertile ground for growth.

Alexa Goldman spoke of John F. Kennedy's political mistakes with the Bay of Pigs — and the reassurance he inspired during the Cuban missile crisis.

Valedictorian Aristana Scourtas said actions and words are true measures of intelligence, not test scores, and knowledge can be found in unlikely places and beauty forged from hardship.

"Who is to say that each of us squeezed under life's pressures can't be a precious gem," she said.

Nancy Do, in her invocation, urged students to tap into their imaginations to spark dreams.
