Watershed Year For Andrews Chapel: Open to Public Memorial Day

One of five things to know about Swampscott today: the historic Andrews Chapel will be open to the public before and after the town's Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May 27.

Andrews Chapel, which is in the Swampscott Cemetery, will be open to the public before and after the town's Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May 27.

The Memorial Day observances are at noon. The chapel will be open at 10 a.m.

In December, Andrews Chapel and the Swampscott Cemetery were voted on to the National Register of Historic Places. The Mass Historical Commission voted unanimously for the designation.

 The 1923 Chapel has undergone extensive exterior renovations. Now plans for the renovation of the much deteriorated interior are underway. The interior renovations will be funded by private donations.

Members of the Restoration Committee, along with contractors and architects involved in the planning of the project, will be available Monday to answer questions.

2) Town and School Watch:

The School Committee and the Board of Selectmen meet Wednesday at 7 p.m., the committee at the high school and selectmen at Town Hall.

3) Swampscott Academics:

Marianne Fair Yasi, daughter of Maureen and Paul Yasi of Swampscott graduated from Saint Michael's College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology at the college's 106th commencement exercises held on the college campus May 12th.

The commencement speaker was political commentator Mark Shields, who addressed 470 students earning bachelor's degrees, 43 earning master's degrees and 4,000-plus in the assembly.

4) Weather Watch: 

A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Patchy fog before 2 pm. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a high near 71.
