The Northeast Animal Shelter received 20 dogs and puppies Saturday. They were delivered by tractor-trailer from the south, where they likely would have been put down.

Northeast Animal Shelter of Salem, 347 Highland Ave.,  has 20 new dogs and puppies looking for homes.

These are southern dogs, strays and abandoned animal that were likely going to be put down at southern shelters overwhelmed by the large number of animals dropped in their laps, said Laurie McCannon, a director at the Salem shelter.

The dogs were delivered by P.E.T.S LLC (Peterson Express Transport Service) of Cookeville, Tenn.
