Track Teams Double Up Sachems

The boys and girls teams came away with convincing wins over Saugus Wednesday at home.

Several boys and girls turned in either personal or season best results in track and field events Wednesday at the field house.

The meet also saw members of both teams cheer a Saugus high jumper after he sprang, curled and slid his body over the bar at 6 feet 2 inches.

The Big Blue boys won their meet 58-28.

The trio finished 1-2-3, and Trevor Whelean turned in his best time ever in the mile.

Blue shot-putters also finsihed 1-2-3.

Robert Seymour won the event and Danny Duff threw the shot the farthest he has ever thrown it, 37 feet 1 inch, said Coach Joe Tenney.

The coach said Andy Covino ran well in the 600 and Ian Munnely ran well in the 300.

High jumping generated positive drama at the meet's end.

Saugus team members clapped out a slow beat and Swampscott kids stood in clusters to support Sachem Oliseameka Obiefuna as he sailed over 6 feet 2 inches.

He jumped off the mat in excitement and the kids cheered.

The jumper tried but fell short of 6 feet 4 inches, a height he would like to jump by the end of the season, he said earlier.

The Swampscott girls won their meet 69-17.

Highlights included the 48.5 time turned in by Alison Grimes in the 300 as well as a 9.2 by Vy Le in the 55 hurdles, said coach Eric Robinson.

Swampscott finsihed 1-2-3 in several longer races — the 600, 1,000, 1 mile and 2 mile.

Saugus was thin on competitors so the Swampscott coach entered more racers than usual in some events, sharpening the competion and turning up the meet's training value.

An example of this was the 600. He entered Sarah Kelley — who usually competes in the 1,000 — in the 600.

She won, running 2:18.
