Swampscott Officer Takes First in Triathlon

One hundred-seventy competitors swam, biked and ran the JCC's 11th annual Triathlon on Sunday.

Swampscott police officer Kevin Reen powered his way through the course Sunday in Marblehead and Swampscott

Under cloudy skies and in cool temperatures he  finished the 1/8-mile swim, 10-mile bike and 3.5-mile run in 52:13. First place.

It was the third time he has won the triathlon. The triathlete said after the race that he trains hard and likes the personal challenge the triathlon poses.

"It's a pride factor," he said. "I want to do the best I can."

Kristen Lamb of Marblehead won the women's category with a time of 59:26.

Eleven-year-old Maggie Barden of Swampscott won the women's 19-and-under category clocking the course in 1:21:47.

Other notable Swampscott finishers included Scott Rosen, 17th, at 1:04:42; Wendy Fasciano, 52nd, at 1:12:43; and Steve Hunt, 62nd, at 1:16:02.

The field consisted of of 170 competitors who started the race by swimming in the JCC pool.

They followed the swim with bike loops around Marblehead Neck and a run down Atlantic Avenue to Humphrey Street and back to the JCC.

A crowd lined both sides of the driveway to the JCC cheering the runners to the finish line.

Some runners cracked a smile and waved, while others kept their focus until the very end.

The athletes came from as far away as New York and, Chicago and Virginia, said JCC Spokeswoman Leigh Blander.
