Swampscott Handyman Rescues Toddler

Todd Flannery's walk with his 2-year-old turned into a rescue on Superior Street Monday.

Todd Flannery's walk with his 2-year-old boy for ice cream turned into a roof rescue a little more than a block from their Pine Street home on Monday afternoon.

Flannery said he was was walking with his son, Shayne, about 4:30 when he heard what sounded like a baby crying.

He looked up and saw a small child on the second story roof of a Superior Street home,  he said.

Flannery set his son on the grass, climbed the porch railing and pulled himself on to the roof, Spiderman style, and came down with the crying child, he said.

It looked like no one was home so he walked down the street with the scared child looking for the mom.

He then saw police and the child's mother, who was very upset.

Flannery, of Flannery's Handymen, said it looked like the child had pulled down the top part of the window and climbed outside and on to the roof.

Tuesday afternoon, Flannery held his 2-year-old son, Shayne in front of their house.

The father asked his son questions about their experience from the day before, and the 2-year-old gave an animated account of what he had seen.

Shayne's words included "daddy," "baby" and "roof."

Shayne pointed, raised his voice, smiled and looked left and right.

He appeared to take great pleasure in recounting the rescue.

His father told him to be sure to stay off roofs.
