The Play's the Thing: Sign Up For Swampscott Summer Theater

Here is one of five things to know about Swampscott today: the Summer Theater Program includes chances for kids to sing, act, dance, and enjoy projects involving costumes and scenery.

1) Newsbit of the Day:

The Swampscott High School Drama Club is proud to announce the return of Swampscott Summer Theater, a fun-filled musical theater program for kids entering grades three through nine.   

Sessions are held Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 A.M. until 1 P.M. starting on July 9th. The program will culminate with a performance of Annie Kids, the popular Broadway musical, on August 8th at 11:30 A.M.

“We are excited to be back for our twelfth year," said Jim Pearse, the program’s director.  “It’s a great opportunity to get kids involved in theater at a younger age. What I think is most unique about our program is that the counselors are current SHS Drama Club members, which encourages and inspires the kids to be more involved in music or theater when it’s time to go back to school.”

The program includes chances to sing, act, dance, and enjoy projects involving costumes and scenery.

Tuition is $300 for five weeks or $270 for any four weeks.  Swampscott Summer Theater is available to kids from Swampscott and all other surrounding communities.

2) Town and School Watch:

The Open Space & Recreation Plan Committee has been developing a new Open Space & Recreation Plan for the town of Swampscott since August 2012. After reviewing numerous previous studies including the last plan from 1983, performing a community survey, and meeting with town boards, departments and experts, the committee has completed a draft of a new Plan.

A community forum will be held Tuesday, June 11, at 7 pm at Swampscott High School in the auditorium. It will focus on explaining the purpose of a plan, describing the current state and issues of the town's open spaces and recreation areas, outlining the analysis of needs, and presenting the goals and objectives to help Swampscott improve and fully realize the potential of these key features in town.

3) Swampscott Academics:

The following local residents received degrees from Clark University on Sunday, May 19.

Jeffrey S. Medoff, of Swampscott, graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Artsin English. Medoff received the Edward N. Trachtenberg Endowed Prize from the Premedical/Predental Program.
