Selectmen to Talk Town Hall Hours Tonight

The Board of Selectmen will also take up establishing a permanent Athletic Fields Study Committee when the board meets tonight at 7.

Selectmen have lots to talk about when they meet at Town Hall Wednesday, July 19, including whether to cut the work week to four days in the summer for Town Hall employees.

Under the four-day plan, the building would be open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. And instead of an hour the employees would have 30 minutes for lunch, said Town Administrator Tom Younger.

The abbreviated week would save $3,000-$8,000 in energy over the summer, and close the building on a day that it does not see a lot of traffic in the summer, he said.

He said the four-day work week has been instituted as a permanent feature elsewhere but Swampscott would just be trying out the schedule.

The board is also scheduled to take up the formation of a permanent Athletic Fields Study Committee. Duties would include review of fields, their condition and designing a maintenance plan.
