Phillips Park Upgrade on Selectmen's Radar

Selectmen will gather for their annual strategic planning session tonight at the high school.

Tonight selectmen will talk about what they want to accomplish in the coming year.

The meeting is an informal one in a different place — the high school's main office conference room.

At least a few board members want to talk about expanding and improving , the town's sprawling athletic complex off Humphrey Street.

The selectmen's chairman, Matt Strauss, said a private group has been trying to raise funds for an artificial turf field and other improvements at Phillips Park.

Improvements might also include expanded parking, and work to the dilapidated stands and press box.

The private committee has had a tough time raising the kind of money needed for the improvements, especially in this tough economy, Strauss said.

Private money would still help pay for the project but to make it a reality, the improvements would require public support.

Jill Sullivan is also interested in Phillips Park improvements.

David Van Dam wants to talk about Humphrey Street parking and Rich Malagrifa does, as well.

Tonight's meeting is a public meeting but the change of setting makes for a more relaxed atmosphere, several board members said.

The session starts at 6.
