Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the third Monday in January, is a federal holiday that honors the American civil rights leader.
The clergyman used nonviolent protests including boycotts, sit-ins and marches to draw attention to injustice and bring about change.
He was assassinated April 4, 1968.
On Jan. 17, 2000, for the first time, Martin Luther King Jr. Day was officially observed in all 50 U.S. states, according to the online encyclopedia Wikipedia.
