Did you know that the US Environmental Protection Agency warns against using lawn equipment that causes air and dust pollution which contributes to health problems?  And that the World Health Organization recognizes noise as a concern for public health and environmental health?  And also that the American Heart Association relates fine particulate matter to decreased cardiovascular health and an increase in mortality?  I learned all of this and more at the April 22 meeting presented by the organizers of Seaside Calm (seaside-calm.org).

Because of these disturbing concerns, I believe we, as the residents of Swampscott, have a duty to support the upcoming Town Meeting Warrant regarding the partial ban on leaf blowers during the summer months.  Consider these points as well:

  • Leaf blowers stir up fine particulate matter made up of mold, fungi, pesticides, diesel soot, fecal matter, and carcinogens.  These particles can remain suspended in the air for up to three days.
  • Gas-powered leaf blowers are major polluters.  One hour of leaf blowing equals the pollution of driving 350 miles in one car.
  • Noise pollution has been shown to contribute to hearing loss, high blood pressure, headaches, and mental health.
  • Leaf blowers are an occupational health risk due to the very high air and noise pollution levels they create around the user.

The American Lung Association of California states that the fine particle matter stirred up by leaf blowers is comparable to second-hand smoke.  At the Town Meeting, should we choose the health and well-being of Swampscott residents over perfect lawns and gardens?  I think the choice is pretty clear.
