Jackson Park Playground Project Recycles

Organizers expect to heel shovels in the ground this fall.

The effort to raise funds to build a passive recreation area and playground at continues one piece of scrap metal at a time.

The committee volunteers will hopefully reach two major milestones this fall.

First, the long awaited shovel in the ground, as plans to begin construction draw near and second, by October reaching an amazing 100 tons of scrap metal (200,000 lbs.) collected since 2008.

Adding July’s total the amount total weight of metal collected is 89.18 tons (178,360 lbs.) The average amount of money raised from each monthly collection is anywhere from $500-$1,000 a month based on the amount of tonnage collected and the price of metal.

The Jackson Park Project receives 75 percent of the value and Scrap-It of Everett keeps 25 percent to cover their costs for providing transport of the recycle bins.

In cooperation with the Swampscott Department of Public Works, the collections are held at the DPW Yard on Paradise Road on the last Saturday of every month through October from 8:00 to noon.

The next collection is scheduled for August 27th. Metal of all types is accepted. The motto is if it’s metal, we take it!

It’s a win/win for everyone, not only does it help raise funds for the JP Playground Project but it helps the environment!

In addition residents can further help the cause by making tax deductible donations to theCharitable Trust Fund in C/) Jackson Park Playground Project or by purchasing some unique Jackson Park Products including, t-shirts, cooler bags, blankets, and hats or by buying raffle tickets for a chance to win tickets to a Red Sox game in State Street Pavilion seats donated by Tony Scibelli for a September game versus the Orioles.
