Is the US Postal Service's Unofficial Motto True in Swampscott?

Does the Postal Service still live up to its unofficial motto of doing everything it takes to get you your mail?

"Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds."

Tuesday's weather brought about everything but brimstones to bear on Swampscott including sleet and snow and rain.

We heard from one reader who said her walkway was shoveled cleanly yet she didn't get her mail. She said her neighbor had the same experience.

We called the Swampscott Post Office and asked manager Paula Zizza if there were problems with mail delivery on Tuesday.

She said some delivery was curtailed if residents did not shovel the pathway the carrier takes to deliver mail, but the delivery rate was high for such a stormy day — 98 percent. 

The Postal Service strives to keep its customers aware that they need to shovel walkways to keep the surfaces safe for carriers to deliver their mail, she said.

The manager said the Postal Service's unofficial motto still stands true.

In her 33 years, mail delivery was suspended only once, she said.

That was during the Blizzard of 2013.
