Interest Sprouts in a Swampscott Farmers' Market

Recreation Commission members are expected to make a market presentation to selectmen early next year.

Members of the Recreation Commission are exploring interest in a Swampscott farmers' market.

Those explorations have included talks with a Marblehead farmers' market organizer, said David Van Dam, a selectman and Recreation Commission member.

Commission members learned that the Marblehead market is run by volunteers, not the town.

Van Dam said the response he's heard around Swampscott has been absolutely in favor of a local market.

Recreation Commission member Glenn Kessler said at a recent meeting that he and others on the panel want to help get the market off the ground but it will require volunteers to sustain the effort.

The commission will present the market idea to selectmen early next year, Van Dam said.

He does not believe space for a market would be a problem. Any hurdles would likely revolve around time and cost, he said.

Marblehead holds its market on Saturdays, from 9 to 12 a.m., behind Veterans Middle School.

Vendors sell everything from flowers to lobsters along with fruits, vegetables, handmade goods and baked goods.

It typically opens in June and stays open through the harvest.
